What a way to end the school year!

On Monday and Tuesday at Gateshead Stadium a squad of 7 Year 5/6 footballers took part in the annual John Hird Challenge Cup.  Our school has quite a pedigree in this competition since being invited in 2012 where we have made the final every single year and won the cup on 2 occasions.

On Monday we played our knock-out match against Brandling and won 9-1 to progress to the semi-final stage.  Falla Park was our opposition and in a game of contrasting halves, South Street shaded the match narrowly 2-1 with a brace from captain Jordan (that included a left foot piledriver to win the game!).

The final was against an excellent Lingey House whom we have faced twice before with a win a piece in the final in 2012 and 2013.  A tense first half ended with South Street narrowly in front thanks to two pieces of magic from Kieran and an excellent defensive display from Nathan.  The second half began nervously but South Street played through it to emerge 5-1 winners with additional goals from Lewis C, Carl and Jordan.

There were many special guests in attendance to watch the final and give out the winners’ medals and cup.  These included the Mayor and Mayoress of Gateshead, Mrs Hird (Councillor John Hird’s wife) and former Newcastle United captain Bob Moncur.   Thank you to Councillor McNally for inviting us to the competition for a fourth consecutive year.

A massive well done to all of our children, we are very proud of you!
